FOR MORE than half his life, Fua-Disala Mika-Mika Valente was a stranger in his own land. Born in 1944 in what was the Belgian Congo to parents who had fled neighboring Angola, Valente was stunned to find the doors to college slammed in his face because he was not a citizen of the Congo, despite having been born there.
